India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the first test launch of the railway mobile intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-P, in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command. The missile, developed by DRDO, is a member of India's Agni missile family, capable of being launched from railway and road vehicles, with a range of approximately 1000 to 2000 kilometers, covering the entire territory of Pakistan and southwest China. India had previously successfully tested this type of missile from the Kalam Island launch site off the coast of Odisha in June 2021, and the road mobile version is now in use.
India's railway network spans the country, with a total length of about 64,374 kilometers, and tunnels can be used to reduce the risk of missiles being detected or destroyed, thus making it more difficult for potential adversaries to detect and target the Agni-P missile through railway mobile launches.
