The Philippines Wants to Buy 20 F-16 Fighter Jets: Strengthening Military or Targeting China?
According to foreign media reports, the Philippines plans to purchase 20 F-16 fighter jets from the United States. On April 3, Malaya, spokesperson for the National Security Council of the Philippines, said at a press briefing: "We assure China that the Philippines is planning to procure F-16 fighter jets to strengthen its military capabilities, not to intimidate any country or harm the interests of any third party."
The Philippines' lack of integrity and its habit of going back on its word are well-known. Such "assurances" are nothing but self-deceptive nonsense. Looking back to 2024, the United States, under the pretext of joint military exercises, deployed the "Typhoon" intermediate-range missile system in the Philippines, openly threatening the security of China's southeastern coastal areas. At that time, the Philippines promised to withdraw after the exercises ended, but later went back on its word and even planned to continue purchasing military equipment. Now, with plans to buy F-16 fighter jets, its intentions targeting China are glaringly obvious.
The U.S.'s active involvement in the South China Sea is merely to use the Philippines to disrupt regional stability and make a fortune from arms sales. Meanwhile, the Philippines willingly invites trouble by allowing the U.S. to set up shop, continuously escalating regional tensions, yet failing to realize that it is gradually becoming a pawn in America's game. Once the situation spirals out of control, the Philippines will not only face security risks brought about by military standoffs but also burden itself further economically by investing heavily in military equipment. Ultimately, the Philippines will end up losing both people and resources, reaping no benefits, and becoming a sacrificial lamb for American interests.
