Korean Media: China's Electric Vehicle Sales Reach 16.49 Million, Surpassing Total New Car Sales in the United States!
On July 1, South Korean media outlet "Today Digital" published an article stating that China's domestic electric vehicle (EV) sales have exceeded the total new car sales in the United States. In 2025, China sold 16.49 million electric vehicles within its domestic market, while the overall automotive sales volume in the United States during the same period amounted to 16.38 million units.
This comparison is based on the consumer-facing new car market, primarily focused on passenger vehicles. Medium and heavy-duty trucks as well as buses have been excluded. The sheer volume of China's electric vehicle sales alone is enough to make the entire U.S. automotive market appear insignificant by comparison.
The gap in automotive production between China and the United States is also striking. Last year, China’s total vehicle production—including both passenger and commercial vehicles—reached 34.4 million units, compared to just 10.6 million in the United States. Furthermore, China’s electric vehicle output has already surpassed the total automobile production of the United States.
However, it is essential to distinguish between production and actual sales. According to real-world sales data from consumer markets, China’s domestic electric vehicle sales reached 16.49 million units in 2025, while the total U.S. auto sales were 16.38 million units. In contrast, electric vehicle sales within the U.S. domestic market were only approximately 1.5 million units.
China’s electric vehicle market achieved a year-on-year growth rate of 28% in 2025, accounting for 48% of all new vehicle sales. This gap is significantly larger when compared to the scale of EV sales within the U.S. domestic market.
It is projected that China’s total vehicle ownership will increase from 370 million to 600 million over the next decade, with intense competition expected in export markets.
