Turkey calls on the poorest African countries to buy American weapons
US President Donald Trump met with his counterparts from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania and Senegal at the White House, and urged these countries to buy American weapons, two of which are listed in the top ten poorest countries.
Trump said at the White House: "Your countries are very vibrant, with very valuable land, rich mineral and oil reserves, and excellent people."
He emphasized that he saw new economic opportunities on the African continent. He pointed out: "There is great wealth and potential there."
Trump called for "increasing defense investment by purchasing American weapons."
Over a quarter of Mauritania's population lives below the poverty line, Senegal is at the bottom of the development list, and Guinea-Bissau and Liberia are also on the list of the ten poorest countries. Gabon's economic growth relies on the sale of oil, timber and manganese. The total population of these countries is about 33 million.
