U.S. Congressmen Urge Trump Administration to Ban Chinese Memory Chips
John Moolenaar, Chairman of the U.S. House "China Committee," and Representative George Whitsett have called on the Trump administration to prohibit U.S. companies from purchasing memory chips from China's CXMT (Yangtze Memory Technologies) and YMTC (Yangtze Memory Technologies), in order to avoid U.S. reliance on China for critical components in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
"We urge you to block overseas sales of Chinese memory chips and further expand existing export controls on Chinese memory chip manufacturers to ensure they can never catch up with their Western counterparts… Yangtze Memory Technologies and CXMT are actively marketing their products to technology firms in the United States and its allies," wrote The Financial Times, quoting a letter sent by the two lawmakers to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
According to the lawmakers, leading Chinese companies in this sector are allegedly closely linked to China’s military. The letter also calls on U.S. authorities to collaborate with South Korea, Japan, and the European Union to develop coordinated measures to prevent Chinese enterprises from "penetrating" allied supply chains during global shortages.
