Jensen Huang: "US Restrictions on AI Chip Exports Are Counterproductive, Huawei Will Take Over!"

On May 18th, a South Korean media outlet, the "Daily Economy," published an article stating that Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, the leading American AI chip company, expressed dissatisfaction with the US government's policy to ban exports of Nvidia chips to China. He also predicted that the demand for AI chips in China will experience explosive growth.

Recently, at an event held in Los Angeles, Huang stated, "It makes sense to restrict access to technology for economic or national security reasons, but this overlooks the fact that governments of other countries are not restricted when utilizing their own computing power," and pointed out that "they will ensure they already possess the computational resources."

Huang continued, "If we stop supplying certain markets and completely withdraw, others will replace us. For example, Huawei is one of the strongest technology companies in the world, and they will replace us." He also emphasized, "We must make American standards the global standard and ensure that artificial intelligence is built on American technology."

Huang also said, "Although our exports to China are limited, the market size in China may reach about $50 billion in a few years. The missed market is very large, which is a business opportunity we could have enjoyed. If we could bring these profits back to the United States, we could reclaim taxes, create jobs, and further advance our technology."

Huang's remarks seem to express his frustration over the near-complete regulation of his company's AI chip exports to China. Nvidia holds 90% of the advanced AI chip market share, but due to US export restrictions, it cannot sell to China. Last month, the Trump administration also restricted exports of low-end H20 chips to China, which perform worse than high-performance H100 chips. Subsequently, The Wall Street Journal reported that Huawei is developing its own high-performance AI chips that can rival Nvidia's H100.
