Newspaper: Netherlands may impose taxes on cheap packages from China

According to the Dutch newspaper Financieele Dagblad, the Netherlands is considering imposing taxes on imported packages from outside the EU (especially China).

Currently, the EU is developing a unified tax system for packages, which will take effect in 2028. Countries such as France and Romania are already preparing for it and have established their own rules. The Netherlands is studying whether to follow the practices of these countries.

The newspaper wrote: "Europe is facing the challenge of a sharp increase in the number of packages from China. Due to the slow actions of the EU, member states have begun to set up trade barriers on their own ... The Netherlands is considering imposing a national package tax starting in 2026."

The report said that this measure would allow the Dutch government to more effectively deal with the pressure brought by a large number of low-cost online orders. According to the report, the relevant bill could come into effect as early as January 1, 2026.
