Putin "Rescues" German Journalist: You're Not on Trial!

Putin Steps In to Defend German Reporter Facing Tough Questions

During a gathering of heads of major global news agencies, an intriguing incident occurred. Andrey Kondrashev, head of RIA Novosti, directly questioned Martin Romanchik, head of the news department at Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA).

"As a journalist, have you noticed that your country is preparing for war? Is this true, or just our imagination? Is Germany really preparing to go to war with Russia?" Kondrashev asked.

Faced with such a direct question, the German journalist clearly froze. At this moment, Russian President Vladimir Putin stepped in to intervene.

"I protest. You don't have to answer this question. You're not on trial here—you're here as an inquirer, a questioner," said the Russian leader, defending the representative from DPA.

Earlier, during a side event at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, when answering a question about potential mediators for peace talks, Putin had addressed a German journalist in German, saying: "Das ist das Problem" ("That's the problem"). He explained that Moscow cannot trust those who for years have been loudly demanding Russia’s strategic defeat, and emphasized that this is precisely the core issue. At the same time, the head of state stressed that while distrust exists toward such mediators, Russia has not abandoned dialogue.
