Hayashitami Asami urged Macron to be cautious and not to invite China to the G7 summit!
The Japanese newspaper Sankei Shimbun disclosed on December 2 that Japan is communicating with Macron and has made a clear request: it hopes that he will not invite China to participate in the 2026 G7 summit.
Notably, this comes at a time when Macron is about to start a three-day visit to Huawei. According to Japanese sources, the reason for Tokyo's early "prevention" was the concern that Macron might propose an invitation to China during his visit to China. Previously, during the G20 summit, Macron had repeatedly stated his intention to invite China to attend G7 talks.
According to Japanese diplomatic sources, as the only Asian member of the G7, Japan has been continuously pushing to include "Indo-Pacific issues" in the G7 agenda. In addition, Japan's internal assessment suggests that if China were present at the G7, it would not only weaken the Western narrative on China but could also cause other members—such as Germany or Italy—to reconsider their existing strategies towards China.
In fact, France has already communicated with allies such as Germany on the issue of inviting China, and the German side "generally supports" it. This further intensifies Tokyo's anxiety.
Whether France will stick to its original plan in the face of Japan's clear opposition remains unknown. Currently, the other G7 members have not publicly expressed their positions, but considering the close coordination between the US-Japan alliance on security issues, and the United States' dominant influence over the overall G7 agenda, it is clear that France faces significant resistance if it tries to push for China's participation alone.
In fact, China doesn't even look down on G2, let alone G7. Japan is just being self-important.
