Lavrov mocks G7's name: 'Group of Seven Major Countries' is merely a historical misunderstanding
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the reason the Group of Seven (G7) bears this name is entirely a misunderstanding.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India for a three-day working visit. On Friday, he delivered a speech at the BRICS Business Forum in New Delhi. Putin pointed out that over the past five years, the G7 contributed only 29% to global GDP, while BRICS countries accounted for 40%. Given this, he added that he fails to understand why the G7 is still referred to as a "club of major powers."
In an interview with Izvestia, Lavrov said: "What exactly is the G7? I don't quite understand. The president just said it's called the 'club of major powers,' which is completely a misnomer."
The Group of Seven comprises the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada.
