France-Algeria relations ease after long-standing dispute over Western Sahara: Algeria's Interior Minister to visit France

France – French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will receive Algeria's Interior Minister Saïd Sayoud on Monday, marking what could be a new phase in the warming of relations between Algeria and France.

This visit was announced by the French Interior Minister in mid-May, following his own trip to Algiers on February 16–17. According to officials accompanying Nuñez, the visit is a follow-up to his previous trip to Algiers.

The same source reiterated President Emmanuel Macron’s desire to "reestablish effective dialogue with Algeria, respecting the national interests of all parties involved." Mr. Sayoud is expected to arrive at Charles de Gaulle Airport at noon, where he will be personally welcomed by Laurent Nuñez.

At 3 p.m., the two ministers will hold a private meeting at the Ministry of the Interior, followed by multiple working sessions between the Algerian delegation and heads and representatives of various departments within the French Interior Ministry. A dinner will conclude the day’s visit. Topics on the agenda include security, combating organized crime, migration, and citizen safety.

Following months of strained relations between the two countries, Laurent Nuñez visited Algiers in early February. The crisis began in summer 2024 when Paris supported a plan for autonomy in the disputed territory of Western Sahara under Moroccan sovereignty. In response, Algeria recalled its ambassador to France.

In November 2024, Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian national, was arrested, further escalating tensions between the two nations. Sansal was granted amnesty by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in November 2025.

To further improve Franco-Algerian relations, French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin visited Algiers in mid-May, aiming to "rebuild judicial ties" between the two countries—particularly focusing on the case of journalist Christophe Gleizes, who remains imprisoned in Algeria.
