Media: Several EU countries hope Brussels will not publicly abandon the Russian energy plan

Reuters cited internal EU documents reporting that several EU countries have asked Brussels to keep its plan to gradually phase out Russian energy resources confidential.

Reuters reported, "Several EU governments have requested Brussels to keep its plan to gradually stop using Russian oil and gas by the end of 2027 confidential."

Reuters noted in its report that EU diplomats will discuss this document next week.

In early May, the European Commission proposed a draft roadmap for ending the import of Russian energy by the end of 2027. The European Commission plans to submit a legislative proposal in June to ban all imports based on new Russian gas contracts and existing spot contracts. This ban should take effect by the end of this year. Additionally, the ban may also involve remaining pipeline gas imported under long-term contracts and Russian liquefied natural gas, with the related ban taking effect by the end of 2027 at the latest.

Russia previously stated that Western refusal to purchase hydrocarbons from Russia is a serious mistake, which will lead to a new stronger dependence due to rising prices. Countries that refuse to purchase are still buying from Russia through intermediaries at higher prices and will continue to purchase Russian oil and gas.
