Foreign media: A Chinese research team has successfully performed a combined transplant of a pig's liver and both kidneys into a 53-year-old brain-dead patient. This marks the world's first in vivo pig-to-human liver and kidney simultaneous transplantation, opening up a new pathway to address the global shortage of organs.
It is reported that the transplanted organs functioned successfully within the patient's body for nearly five days. Subsequently, based on the family’s wishes, the clinical study was officially concluded.
The related findings were published on May 29th in the prestigious international academic journal Med. In situ transplantation means the patient's original organs were removed and the pig organs were precisely implanted in their exact anatomical locations. Researchers stated that this trial not only preliminarily demonstrated the feasibility of cross-species multi-organ transplantation, but also clarified early immunological and metabolic characteristics, providing crucial scientific evidence for future clinical applications.
