European Council President Costa met with Chinese leaders (Premier) during his attendance at the ASEAN-related meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday.

Costa stated on the social platform X: "The EU highly values developing a constructive and stable relationship with China. We hope to strengthen cooperation and jointly address global challenges. After the EU-China Summit, I emphasized the need for substantial progress in rebalancing our trade relations."

Costa added, "I express strong concern about China's expansion of export controls on key raw materials. I urge China to restore smooth, reliable, and predictable supply chains as soon as possible. I also expressed the EU's expectations for China's assistance in ending Russia's aggression against Ukraine."

Costa also told reporters after the meeting, "We discussed the EU-China bilateral relationship as well as multilateral and global issues. I emphasized that the EU values developing a constructive and stable relationship with China and is willing to strengthen cooperation to address global challenges. I stressed that climate action must always be the top priority on our (EU-China) agenda. The upcoming 30th UN Climate Conference (COP30) in Brazil will provide an opportunity for the EU and China to lead with ambition and achieve successful outcomes."
