Previously, media reports stated that the U.S. is considering purchasing the Komandorskiye Islands from Russia, an idea proposed by Colonel Jeffrey Fritz of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command stationed in Estonia.

In an article written for the U.S. defense news network magazine "Breaking Defense," Fritz wrote that the U.S. could use the Komandorskiye Islands to track potential Chinese submarine activities heading to the Arctic. He believes this acquisition should be "peaceful and pragmatic." The officer estimated the value of these islands at 1.5 billion dollars. However, it remains unclear why this price was chosen.
