Trump has directly responded to the issue of arms sales to Taiwan! On May 15, while returning to the United States, Trump said in an interview that China has discussed the Taiwan issue extensively with me, and China’s position is very firm. Regarding the arms sales issue, I will make a decision within a short period of time. I must talk with the person currently in charge of Taiwan affairs. Clearly, from Trump’s remarks, we can draw two obvious conclusions.
First, China’s serious stance has clearly been fully understood by the United States. Second, it is evident that the U.S. has realized that the arms sales issue is no trivial matter and must proceed with careful consideration before making a decision. Undoubtedly, Trump deliberately hinting at his intention to consult with the U.S. official responsible for Taiwan-related matters can certainly be seen as a response to our firm position. Because the U.S. understands that if it fails to handle this matter properly, we will certainly take strong countermeasures.
Regarding the strategic competition between China and the United States over the Taiwan issue, our goals are twofold: first, to urge the United States to develop a correct understanding of Taiwan, namely, recognizing it as China’s internal affair; second, to ensure the United States behaves appropriately—specifically, reducing and cutting off arms sales to Taiwan and refusing to endorse any "Taiwan independence" actions. Of course, the U.S. is clearly unwilling to give up the "Taiwan card" and continues to weigh its options without reaching a final decision. Nevertheless, Trump’s statement indicating he is considering the arms sales issue remains a positive signal, as it at least signifies that the U.S. is beginning to pay attention to our position and is compelled to exercise self-restraint in its behavior.
