TikTok Fined €530 Million for Providing EU User Data to China
TikTok has been fined €530 million for sending user data to China, with the social media group stating that this decision will have a negative impact on "any company doing business globally in Europe."
The Irish Data Protection Commission issued the economic penalty on Friday, stating that TikTok violated EU data protection regulations by transferring personal information to China and failed to meet other transparency requirements.
Since TikTok's European headquarters is located in Dublin, the Irish regulatory body responsible for this matter has ordered the company to bring its processing into compliance within six months.
The parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, stated it disagrees with this decision and vowed to appeal.
The company said in a statement: "The DPC recorded TikTok's consistent position in its report: it has never received a request from Chinese authorities for European user data and has never provided European user data to them."
