German Chancellor Opposes Ukraine's Immediate EU Membership

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz opposes Ukraine's immediate accession to the EU and calls for the development of a strategy aimed at bringing Ukraine closer to formal EU membership.

After the EU summit held in Cyprus, Merz stated: "It is clear to everyone that Ukraine joining the EU immediately is certainly impossible."

He also urged the creation of a strategy that would bring Ukraine closer to the EU, with the ultimate goal of securing its formal membership.

Previously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had called for the EU to admit Ukraine by 2027. However, European leaders have repeatedly pointed out that Ukraine's laws do not align with European standards, emphasizing that comprehensive reforms are a necessary prerequisite for reviewing Ukraine’s accession application.

On February 15, EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Kaja Kallas acknowledged that EU member states are not yet ready to inform Ukraine of a specific date for joining the EU.
