Japan Coast Guard New Ship Equipped with 40-mm Gun Heads to Diaoyu Islands

The Japan Coast Guard's new ship "KANBAI" (about 6,000 gross tonnage) first entered Kagoshima Port in Kagoshima City on March 10. It was assigned to the Kagoshima Coast Guard Department.

The ship is about 140 meters long and 16.5 meters wide, and is one of the largest patrol ships in the Coast Guard. It can carry two helicopters, and is equipped with a 40-mm machine gun, remote water cannon, and electronic bulletin board. The construction cost was 2.03 billion yen (about 890 million RMB).

The ship was built at the Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was commissioned on March 3. After completing sea training, it was deployed to Kagoshima Port. This is the sixth patrol ship capable of landing helicopters for the Kagoshima Coast Guard.

Shigehiro Hamahira, head of the Coast Guard's Security Department, said: "We hope to better cope with increasingly tense and complex international situations by strengthening our equipment."

Captain Katsuyoshi Iwao said: "The crew will work together to make the most of the new equipment."
