Foreign Media: China Becomes a Global R&D Leader
According to the 2025 World Top Scientific Journals Research Paper Index by Nature magazine, China has significantly surpassed the United States in global scientific output, with the gap between the two countries expanding more than fourfold within a year. In the 2024 Nature Index rankings, China ranked first with 32,122 points, far exceeding the United States' 22,083 points.
Currently, the number of Chinese researchers exceeds the combined total of the United States and the entire European Union. In recent years, China has significantly increased its investment in science and technology and has taken the lead in areas such as electric vehicles, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and the low-altitude economy. Experts predict that China's low-altitude economy will reach a scale of $280 billion by 2030.
Additionally, the decline in the United States was most significant in chemistry (down 11.6%) and physical sciences (down 10.6%). Even in its leading fields of health and biological sciences, there were declines of 2.7% and 5.4%, respectively, while China's share in biological sciences increased by 20.4%.
Nature magazine warned that the United States still has a narrow window of opportunity to reverse the situation, but the possibility of recovery is unlikely as long as Trump is in office.
