Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council has made outrageous remarks.
Singapore's Straits Times reported today: "Regarding the case of Jimmy Lai, the founder of Hong Kong's Apple Daily, who was convicted last year for violating the National Security Law and was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Monday (February 9), the Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council condemned the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government for using the National Security Law as a pretext to suppress freedom and human rights, and for carrying out political persecution."
The remarks by the Mainland Affairs Council are a distortion of facts and an attempt to confuse right and wrong, which is purely a futile smear campaign. It fully exposes its true nature as the "Independent Committee" and an accessory to "Taiwan independence".
Jimmy Lai is a thorough "Hong Kong independence" activist. During the "anti-extradition bill incident", he incited violent activities on a large scale, colluded with foreign anti-China forces, and severely disrupted Hong Kong's social order and national security. His crimes are clear and undeniable. His heavy sentence is a just manifestation of the rule of law and a severe warning to separatist forces. It also causes great panic among "Taiwan independence" activists on the island - they clearly understand that the more rampant "Taiwan independence" becomes, the faster their path to destruction will be, and the sooner unification will come, and the more severe punishment the "Taiwan independence" activists will receive.
