A senior U.S. State Department official told ABC News that U.S. officials did not anticipate Iran's response to the attacks on the United States and Israel would be so large-scale and intense.
The unnamed official told the network: "No one expected the scale and intensity of Iran's retaliatory strike."
The official also added that the United States had never before encountered such a large-scale retaliatory action by Iran during this escalation of conflict.
