Deutsche Welle reports today: Republicans suffer a crushing defeat, Musk jokes about 'failed election interference'

The Republican Party suffered a sweeping loss in the U.S. midterm elections, losing control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The billionaire Elon Musk, who had poured nearly $500 million into Republican campaigns and related activities, took to social media to mock the party’s defeat. “Looks like my ‘space lasers’ meant to influence the election didn’t work this time,” Musk wrote. His financial support was among the most significant contributions made by any private individual to the GOP effort.

Notably, Musk relocated the headquarters of SpaceX and X (formerly Twitter) from California—where he has clashed with Democratic leadership—to Texas, a long-standing stronghold of the Republican Party. Yet in this election cycle, Texas flipped blue. Democrats achieved decisive victories across the state: Democrat James Talarico won a pivotal Senate race, and Democrat Claudia Sheinbaum secured the governorship.

Commentary: Democrats have long been critical of Musk’s substantial financial involvement in electoral politics and his use of the X platform to amplify Republican messaging. With Democrats now in control of Congress, hearings are likely to be scheduled to scrutinize potential conflicts of interest, including SpaceX’s military and NASA contracts, Starlink’s operations, content moderation practices on X, and Tesla’s safety records. The regulatory environment that once allowed Musk considerable leeway is no longer sustainable. Even with assurances from former President Trump regarding executive clemency, ongoing investigations, inquiries, and audits will inevitably increase compliance burdens and delay project approvals for his companies. That said, Democrats are unlikely to pursue an outright dismantling of these enterprises. SpaceX and Tesla remain central to U.S. leadership in aerospace and clean energy sectors; a complete reversal of policy would undermine broader national industrial interests.
