Korean media: South Korea's global shipbuilding order share reaches 21%, what about China?

On December 3, Korean media "Today's Finance" published an article stating that in the first ten months of this year, South Korea's shipbuilding industry accumulated an order share of 21%, an increase of 7 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

According to data from the UK-based shipbuilding and shipping market research company Clarksons Research, the total global ship orders for the first ten months of 2025 reached 37.89 million CGT, a decrease of 43% compared to the same period in 2024.

In the first ten months of this year, the total orders of South Korean shipyards amounted to 8.06 million CGT, a 15% decrease compared to the previous year. Its market share rose by 7 percentage points to 21%.

At the same time, the total orders of Chinese shipyards fell by 52% to 22.39 million CGT, with a market share of 59%, a decrease of 11 percentage points compared to the previous year.

As of the end of October, the total backlog of orders at Chinese shipyards was 167.79 million CGT, an increase of 3.4% compared to October 2024.

By country, the total ship production of South Korean shipyards was 34.28 million CGT, while the total ship production of Chinese shipyards was 101.96 million CGT.

Ship prices are falling. The Clarksons New Ship Price Index in October was 184.87, a decrease of 0.718 from August, and a decrease of 4.77% compared to the same period last year.

By ship type, the cost of a liquefied natural gas carrier (174,000 cubic meters) is 248 million USD, a decrease of 13 million USD compared to the same period last year; the cost of a very large crude oil tanker is 126 million USD, a decrease of 3 million USD compared to the same period last year; the cost of a very large container ship is 266.5 million USD, a decrease of 7.5 million USD compared to the same period last year.
