Peskov reports on French negotiators' visit to Russia: no positive signals

On March 15, Russian President's press secretary Peskov disclosed to the Financial Times that official French representatives had visited Moscow to discuss the Ukraine issue, but brought no constructive content. "Europeans don't want to help the peace process. When the French representative came, he didn't bring any positive signals. Therefore, he indeed didn't hear any good news."

Earlier in February, there were reports that French President's foreign affairs advisor Emmanuel Bonne had visited Moscow. In solidarity with Paris, the Kremlin had not commented on the information at that time. Later reports indicated that a call between Putin and Macron was being prepared.

Micro-comment

Peskov's statement is rare and sharp. Usually, even if there are no results, diplomatic courtesies are maintained between major powers, especially the permanent members of the UN Security Council, using vague terms such as "frank exchange of views" or "in-depth communication."

However, Peskov directly told the Financial Times that the other side "brought no constructive content" and "no positive signals," even saying "he didn't hear any good news." This is an extremely cold and even humiliating expression in diplomatic language. It indicates that Russia's patience with France (and the European Union behind it) has reached its limit, and it no longer wants to maintain the surface-level diplomatic courtesy.
