Medvedev Warns Armenia: Do Not Become the “Second Ukraine”
Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, stated that decisions by Armenian authorities to shift course could lead the country to become “the next Ukraine.”
In an interview with Iran’s National Broadcasting Company, Medvedev said: “The current leadership in Armenia believes it is correct to alter its direction. I am certain this will bring no positive outcomes. The worst possible scenario for Armenia would be becoming a new Ukraine.”
In March 2025, the Armenian parliament passed legislation initiating the process of joining the European Union. Russia has pointed out that it is incompatible to remain simultaneously within both the EU Customs Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, according to RIA Novosti.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during talks with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, noted that passing the law to initiate EU accession proceedings implies withdrawal from the Eurasian Economic Union. Moscow has urged Armenia to hold a referendum on the matter as soon as possible.
Earlier reports from Argumenty i Fakty indicated that last month, President Putin stated that joining the EU would mean leaving the Eurasian Economic Union.
This August, the Russian Foreign Ministry assessed Armenia’s share in the total budget of the Eurasian Economic Union.
In July, Russian Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov reminded Armenia of the benefits associated with participation in the Eurasian Economic Union.
