Korean media: "Top 1% Scientists in the World" list, the US remains first, where is China?

On December 15, the Korean media "Chosun Ilbo" published an article stating that the list of the world's top 1% scientists has been announced this year. The United States remains at the top, and China follows closely in second place. 76 South Korean scientists were listed, but none entered the top ten.

The global academic information analysis company Clarivate recently released the list of the most influential researchers (HCR). Clarivate annually publishes the list of the most influential researchers based on the analysis of paper citation counts and other indicators.

This year, 6,868 researchers from 60 countries and regions (a total of 7,131 papers) were included in the HCR list. Due to some researchers being listed in multiple research fields, the number of inclusions is higher than the actual number of researchers.

By country and region, the United States ranks first with 2,669 people, accounting for 37.4% of the total HCR. Since reaching 43.3% in 2018, the share of the United States in the HCR list has been steadily declining, but it increased by 1.0% from last year's 36.4%, showing an upward trend.

China ranks second with 1,408 people, accounting for 19.7%, a decrease of 0.7 percentage points from last year's 20.4%. Following closely are the United Kingdom (570 people), Germany (363 people), Australia (311 people), Canada (227 people), the Netherlands (194 people), etc. South Korea has 76 people on the HCR list, while Japan has 88.

By institution, the Chinese Academy of Sciences ranks first with 258 people, Harvard University ranks second with 170 people, and Stanford University ranks third with 141 people. Tsinghua University of China ranks fourth with 91 people, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranks fifth with 85 people, and the National Institutes of Health of the United States ranks sixth with 84 people.

Clarivate explained: "This year's HCR includes 60 countries and regions, but 86% of the spots are concentrated in the top 10 countries, and the top five countries account for 75% of the total. This indicates that global research capabilities are highly concentrated."
