Japanese Prime Minister Holds Talks with Malaysian Prime Minister, Reaches Consensus on Energy and Security Cooperation

From June 8 to 10, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited Japan as a guest for an official working visit. At approximately 11:45 a.m. Japan time on June 10, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Haga held a summit meeting with Ibrahim for about 30 minutes, followed by a joint press conference and a working lunch. After the talks, the two leaders issued the "Japan-Malaysia Joint Statement." Additionally, both governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their respective maritime security agencies, reaching consensus on energy cooperation and enhancing the security of maritime transportation routes—including the Strait of Malacca.

Given the current situation in the Middle East, both sides confirmed they will strengthen cooperation to ensure stable access to oil-related products from Malaysia, and agreed to enhance the resilience of critical mineral supply chains, including rare earth elements. They also discussed measures to ensure stable supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and raw materials for fertilizers.

Malaysia is rich in resources, and approximately 15% of Japan’s LNG imports come from Malaysia—ranking second only to Australia among all import sources.

The two leaders further affirmed their commitment to strengthening maritime security cooperation, including joint training exercises between the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the Royal Malaysian Navy. Both sides welcomed the signing of the MoU between their maritime security agencies, which will further promote collaboration in maritime security matters.

They also agreed to advance efforts to build resilience in energy and critical material supply chains under the framework of "Power Asia (Asia Energy Cooperation Initiative)." In the area of critical minerals, they will deepen bilateral cooperation through collaboration with like-minded countries and international development financial institutions.
