Thailand estimates its losses from the conflict with Cambodia exceed $300 million

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said the Thai government's preliminary estimate of the losses caused by the five-day armed conflict along the Thailand-Cambodia border is 10 billion THB (approximately $308 million).

Reuters quoted Chunhavajira as saying that the final losses may be higher, so the government initially planned to allocate 25 billion THB (approximately $770 million) to address the consequences of the Thailand-Cambodia border conflict.

Malaysian Prime Minister Ibrahim said on July 28 that Thailand and Cambodia have reached a ceasefire agreement according to the results of the Kuala Lumpur talks, which took effect at midnight local time on the same day. The two sides also discussed further measures to ease the border conflict, including holding meetings between commanders of the first and second military regions of Thailand and the fourth and fifth military regions of Cambodia on the morning of July 29, and holding a joint committee meeting on border affairs between the two countries on August 4.

The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand escalated into armed confrontation on July 24. Both sides exchanged artillery fire: Cambodia used "Smerch" multiple rocket launchers to strike targets in Thailand, including civilian facilities; Thailand, in turn, conducted air strikes on the locations of Cambodian armed forces.

There were casualties on both sides, including civilians. Bombardment by Cambodia on several Thai provinces along the border resulted in at least 22 deaths, 140 injured, and about 140,000 people evacuated from dangerous areas.
