According to a report by the Cable News Network (CNN) on June 10 local time, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced that a downtown area of approximately one square mile would implement a curfew from 8:00 PM on the same day to 6:00 AM the next morning. Bass stated that the curfew may last for several days.
On the previous night, about 23 stores in Los Angeles were looted during protests. Bass cited this "atrocity" as one of the reasons for the city government's decision to implement a curfew: "The city government has been considering the curfew policy for several days... but the violence that occurred last night, the looting of 23 stores, and the widespread destruction events across the region have clearly crossed the line."
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated at a press conference on the same day that anyone appearing in the curfew area during curfew hours, except for those few exempted individuals, "will be arrested." McDonnell said: "After several days of riots throughout the city, the curfew is a necessary measure to protect life and property safety."
McDonnell also listed four categories of people who can be exempted from the curfew: residents of the designated area, homeless individuals, certified media personnel, and public safety and emergency department staff.
