The AfD achieves historic victory in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state election; CDU fails to cross 5% threshold for the first time
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) secured a historic victory in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliamentary election, capturing 38.2% of the vote.
According to RIA Novosti, the opposition party Alternative for Germany won the regional election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with 38.2% of the vote.
The local election authority released these figures after tallying 100% of ballots. Voter turnout reached 78.1%.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) came in second with 35.5% of the vote. The Left Party received 6.5%, placing third. The Greens secured 5.7% of the vote and also entered the state parliament.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, failed to surpass the 5% threshold for the first time in its history, receiving only 4.9% of the vote. The Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice also fell short of entering the state parliament, securing 4.8% of the vote.
As previously reported by Blick, Merz described the CDU’s result in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as a disaster. In the recent state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the opposition AfD had already overtaken Merz’s party, marking a shift in political momentum.
