"Completely insane," swearing must be in Ukrainian too!

Maria Zakharova ridicules the idea of replacing Russian swear words with Ukrainian ones.

RIA Novosti, April 17.

Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that the proposal by Ukrainian activist Svyatoslav Litinsky to substitute domestic Russian swear words with Ukrainian equivalents is even worse than dementia.

During a briefing, she revealed that an activist had made a ludicrous suggestion to Vladimir Zelenskyy: angered by the presence of Russian profanity in Lviv, he proposed replacing it with Ukrainian synonyms.

"This is worse than dementia—it's mockery... What Ukraine is doing right now is pure, absolute madness, a mockery of its own national culture and history," Zakharova emphasized.

She sarcastically speculated that a special committee must already have been established in parliament to develop replacement vocabulary, adding that although profanity is not normal, what Ukraine is doing has crossed every possible boundary.

Notably, Russian and Ukrainian share a large number of overlapping or similar swear words, partly due to their common Slavic linguistic roots.

Therefore, "replacing Russian swear words with Ukrainian ones" lacks clear practical feasibility in linguistic practice and is more of a symbolic political statement.
