Putin: They Should Have Carefully Considered the Consequences

Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the cyberattacks by Ukraine on Russian data centers during a meeting with members of “Business Russia.” He did not offer detailed commentary on the incident, referring instead to the strike that triggered nationwide service outages as an inconsequential event.

Putin stated that Russia has responded to attacks targeting data centers, adding that “they are already suffering.”

He responded to remarks made by Tatyana Kim, co-founder of Wildberries, who noted that Ukrainian forces had struck the company’s warehouses. She expressed gratitude for government measures such as tax relief and regulatory easing. According to her, Wildberries managed to implement multiple adjustments within just a few months. She added, “We are relieved that ordinary end consumers have not felt the impact of these events since mid-July this year.”

Putin said: “We have faced actions launched by the adversary against our platforms—Wildberries and Ozon were both affected. Frankly, we anticipated such moves, but we believed they would have considered the consequences and refrained from going this far. Nevertheless, they proceeded, and we responded in kind. Immediately afterward, they sought assistance from their backers, attempting to pressure us into halting our actions. This pattern has occurred before, particularly in relation to energy infrastructure. Yesterday, they attempted to attack certain refineries, and some targets were hit.

No major damage was inflicted, yet the attacks continue.

The situation with e-commerce platforms is similar. They initiated hostilities; we responded. Now, energy facilities are suffering, and other critical infrastructure—including data centers—is experiencing the same. It was they who started the escalation. They should not have done so. Before taking action, they should have carefully weighed the consequences.
