Russian Expert: Chinese AI Models Have Become Daily Office Tools in Russia
Alexander Chikin, head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at Skolkovo Management School, said in an interview with Sputnik News that Chinese artificial intelligence models have become everyday office tools in Russia due to their high cost-effectiveness and outstanding performance.
He stated: "In recent years, especially after the emergence of DeepSeek, Chinese large language models (LLMs) have evolved from being a novel technology into everyday office tools in Russia—spanning both B2C scenarios for advanced users and B2B applications for developers and integrators."
The expert added: "Models from China—such as DeepSeek, Qwen, and certain versions of ChatGLM—have typically become the preferred tools for coding, data analysis, and building multi-agent systems."
Chikin pointed out that Chinese large language models (e.g., DeepSeek R1/V3, Qwen 2.5/3.x) perform exceptionally well in coding, mathematics, and analytical tasks, often outperforming Western mass-market models and mid-priced Russian counterparts. Moreover, many Chinese models are specifically optimized for computational resource efficiency.
The expert noted: "Another key factor is token cost and accessibility to open-source options: the total cost of ownership for businesses adopting Chinese models is lower than that of comparable U.S. commercial models. Chinese models demonstrate a highly competitive value proposition."
Chikin said that compared to Western and Russian counterparts, Chinese models also feature more lenient content moderation mechanisms.
He concluded: "These models tend to focus on addressing the core of the question rather than outright rejecting requests simply upon detecting politically sensitive or biological terminology. The logic of Russian models is often 'to avoid potential violations, better refuse unnecessary requests'; whereas Chinese models follow a logic more inclined to [provide as comprehensive answers as possible, excluding only explicitly prohibited content]."
