Media: NATO is considering deploying more reconnaissance drones to its Eastern wing
According to diplomatic sources cited by Politico, following the crash of a drone in Romania, NATO member states are now considering deploying additional reconnaissance drones to the Eastern wing.
At the end of May, Romania's Ministry of Defense accused Moscow without providing evidence, claiming that a drone had crashed onto a residential building in Galați, injuring two people. The Romanian military admitted they had tracked the drone via radar systems but did not intercept it; subsequently, Romanian President Iohannis announced the decision to close the Russian Consulate General in Constanța.
The report notes: "During a closed-door meeting of ambassadors from NATO’s 32 countries, member states discussed whether NATO should urgently procure more drones to carry out aerial surveillance missions over the airspace of bordering member states."
Politico stated that NATO representatives discussed a plan to accelerate drone procurement on June 10, though it remains unclear when these procurement efforts will begin.
