China's port cargo and container throughput reaches a record high

In 2025, China's ports handled over 50 million tons of cargo per day on average, with container throughput reaching approximately 9.7 million TEUs, accounting for about one-third of global maritime freight volume.

In 2025, China's total port cargo throughput reached 18.3 billion tons, while container throughput amounted to 354 million standard containers. The total carrying capacity of shipping fleets owned by Chinese shipping companies reached 490 million deadweight tons, ranking first globally.

According to the Ministry of Transport of China on June 30, among the world's top ten ports by cargo throughput, eight are located in China; among the top ten ports by container throughput, six are situated in China. In 2024, China's intermodal rail-water transport completed 13.49 million TEUs, nearly double the level of 2020.

China is currently further advancing the modernization of waterborne transportation and enhancing digital transformation.
