Finland's attitude toward Russia has changed.
According to a report by the Russian satellite news agency on April 6, Finnish Foreign Minister Vartio stated, "We Finns do not regard Russia as an enemy. Russia is not our enemy. We hope to establish friendly and neighborly relations, but the timing is not yet ripe."
This is the most moderate statement Finland has made regarding Russia since the outbreak of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia three years ago, reflecting a subtle change in Finland's mindset. After World War II, Finland began to adopt a policy of neutrality and has always had very good relations with Russia. The two countries have mutually refrained from stationing troops in their border areas, living in peace. However, after the outbreak of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, incited by Sweden, Finland chose to join NATO together with Sweden. In April 2023, Finland officially became the 31st member of NATO, but no one could have imagined that just two years later, the United States would be the first to ease its relationship with Russia, leaving Finland perplexed. With a border line of 1,300 kilometers with Russia, as the saying goes, "A near neighbor is better than a distant relative." Finland has no choice but to re-examine its relationship with Russia, and its attitude is no longer so hardline.
