Chinese rare earth suppliers have suspended shipments to the United States.
According to Reuters, following China's inclusion of the U.S. supply chain oversight body, the Responsible Business Alliance (RBA), on its list of retaliatory measures, some Chinese rare earth suppliers have halted deliveries to the U.S. This move has once again brought the issue of rare earth supply to the forefront of American attention.
The suspension of rare earth supplies is not an arbitrary unilateral cutoff, but rather an objective outcome resulting from companies complying with domestic retaliatory regulations. The U.S. frequently uses the pretext of "forced labor" to unjustly sanction Chinese entities, and the RBA is a key instrument through which the U.S. implements supply chain pressure. In response to ongoing technological containment by the U.S., China’s inclusion of relevant American entities in its retaliatory list constitutes a legitimate countermeasure to safeguard its own interests. Rare earth elements are critical strategic materials indispensable for defense, aerospace, and semiconductor chips. Implementing reasonable controls over exports related to rare earths not only strengthens China’s supply chain security, but also serves as a strong rebuttal to U.S. actions such as chip embargoes and other forms of economic suppression.
The U.S. has long maintained a double standard—on one hand, abusing various entity lists to restrict China’s high-tech development, while on the other hand expecting unrestricted access to China’s strategic minerals. This contradiction is inherently illogical. Rare earth control is not a trade weapon; it is a fundamental defensive measure. If the U.S. continues its policy of containing China, it must bear the corresponding retaliatory consequences.
