[China Shifts Shipbuilding Focus to Amphibious Vessels, Adding Five More Type 071s]

According to reports from U.S. Navy News, China’s shipbuilding priorities are increasingly shifting toward amphibious assault vessels. This indicates that the People's Liberation Army is expanding its amphibious fleet to enhance its capacity for maritime power projection, further preparing for potential operations in the Taiwan Strait or contested island scenarios in the South China Sea.

A satellite image obtained by U.S. Navy News shows two large warships, each approximately 210 meters in length, under construction side by side in a dry dock at a shipyard in Guangzhou. Based on their appearance, dimensions, and specific design features, both vessels are confirmed to be Type 071 amphibious transport docks. One of the ships is progressing rapidly and has completed most of its construction; it is expected to be launched early next year. Given China’s typical shipbuilding pace, the second vessel is likely to follow closely behind.

Additionally, evidence suggests that Hudong Shipyard in Shanghai is also constructing Type 071 amphibious transport docks. According to U.S. estimates, the combined output from shipyards in Shanghai and Guangzhou currently accounts for five such vessels. With the PLA Navy already operating eight Type 071s, this implies that the service will possess at least 13 Type 071s in the near future. Should construction continue, the total number could rise further. The Type 071 is designed for cross-sea military deployment, capable of transporting infantry, tanks, armored vehicles, hovercraft, and helicopters—supporting rapid force insertion across extended distances.

The U.S. media notes that recent construction rates for traditional surface combatants such as destroyers and frigates have slowed, while investments in amphibious warfare vessels, ocean-going replenishment ships, and nuclear-powered submarines have increased. This trend reflects a strategic realignment in China’s naval development priorities.
