Foreign media: Vietnamese entrepreneur Luu Anh Tuan was arrested by Vietnamese authorities for attempting to transfer heavy rare earth separation technology to a US company. He originally planned to transfer the technology through his company in Vietnam, Vietnam Rare Earth (VTRE), to the US-based VTRU company, in an effort to break China's dominance in the global supply of heavy rare earths.
China currently controls 90% of the global heavy rare earth separation and refining capacity as well as more than half of the mining output. Tuan has permanent residency in the US and is applying for citizenship. After his office in Vietnam was raided, he and 17 employees were arrested. He was eventually sentenced to 16 years in prison and fined $10 million.
