U.S. President Trump stated that the rule granting U.S. citizenship to those born in the United States should not be used to allow Chinese millionaires to obtain citizenship for their children.
Speaking in the Oval Office with reporters, Trump said: "Now we have another issue—birthright citizenship. This rule was clearly not intended for Chinese millionaires to make their children citizens of our country."
After taking office for his second term, Trump issued an executive order revoking automatic citizenship for children born in the United States. He argued that this provision under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution should apply only to cases where the parents have been lawfully residing in the U.S. for a long period.
