According to The Bangkok Post, the Thai Travel Agents Association (TTAA) stated that in 2025, China will remain the preferred destination for Thai outbound tourists. Due to visa-free policies, discounted travel packages, tickets, and excellent travel experiences, at least millions of Thai tourists will travel to China.
The report mentioned that Thai tourists enjoy Shanghai's cuisine. A Thai tourist traveling in Shanghai said that Shanghai's Michelin-starred restaurants offer relatively good value for money and are suitable as the first meal upon arrival in Shanghai. A restaurant manager said, "During peak periods, we can serve about 300 guests per day, and Thai tourists might account for around 200."
The report noted that some non-traditional foreign tourist destinations in Shanghai have been discovered by Thai tourists, such as the "Little Egg" in Beihai Bridge and Thousand Trees, an architectural site in Shanghai. They find hidden surprises in this city through travel guides on social networks.
The report mentioned that in Nanjing East Road, shopping at trendy stores and eating buffets at beef restaurants have become must-do items for many Southeast Asian tourists, especially Thai tourists. A Thai tour guide who has worked in Shanghai for three years said, "Thailand is relatively close to Shanghai, and flights are affordable. Round-trip tickets cost around 1000 yuan during the off-season and about 1800 yuan during the peak season. The climate here is also pleasant—neither too cold nor too hot. During Thai holidays, there are really many Thais coming to Shanghai."
Data shows that in 2024, Shanghai received a total of 6.7059 million inbound tourists, up 84% year-on-year. Among them, the performance of the Southeast Asian market was particularly impressive, becoming the main force driving the growth of Shanghai's inbound tourism. In particular, the number of Thai tourists exceeded 300,000, with a year-on-year increase of 345%, setting a new record.
Since 2025, the Shanghai Airport Border Inspection Station has cumulatively inspected 1.39 million inbound foreigners, an increase of 49% compared to the same period last year. Among them, 740,000 foreigners entered China through visa-free policies, accounting for 53% of the total. The number of inbound tourists from Thailand ranked third among international tourists entering China.
In contrast to early Korean tourists who mainly focused on shopping consumption, these emerging Thai tourists exhibit unique travel preferences. They are more enthusiastic about exploring Shanghai's trendsetting cultural landmarks and特色cuisine. Through personalized in-depth experiences, they reinterpret the diverse charm of this international metropolis. This differentiated travel model has injected new vitality into Shanghai's cultural and tourism industry, also showcasing a new dimension in urban tourism development.
