Foreign media: Global helium production is highly concentrated, with the United States and Qatar collectively accounting for over 75%. In 2025, the U.S. leads with 42.6% (28.6 million cubic feet), followed by Qatar at 33.2% (22.25 million cubic feet), while Russia ranks third with 9.5% (6.36 million cubic feet) but faces export restrictions due to EU sanctions.
Algeria, Canada, China, and Poland each account for 5.8%, 3.2%, 1.6%, and 1.6% respectively. Although China's production is low, it is a major consumer, with its semiconductor industry heavily reliant on imports.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has already affected Qatar’s exports to South Korea, intensifying supply chain risks. In terms of demand, research accounts for 22%, semiconductors and lifting gases each 17%, and medical MRI uses 15%. As chip manufacturing and healthcare expand, helium’s strategic value will continue to rise.
