【Text by Observers Network, Chen Sijia】Since the outbreak of the new round of Israel-Palestine conflict in 2023, Malaysia has consistently supported Palestine and criticized Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip. According to a report by Malaysia's "Star" newspaper on July 22, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar warned that the country has become a target of infiltration by the Israeli intelligence and special services (Mossad), and he promised to take more security measures.

Anwar stated in the Malaysian Parliament that Mossad agents are conducting activities within Malaysia's territory, "Due to our voice and our position, Malaysia has become a target for drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and Mossad agent infiltration. In the latest briefings from our intelligence agencies, there are genuine concerns about national security."

Anwar specifically mentioned a recent case of gun smuggling in Malaysia, which involved a couple of Malaysian citizens who were accused of collaborating with Mossad agents to help foreign agents smuggle weapons from Thailand.

Last year, a couple of Malaysians were arrested for allegedly providing guns and ammunition to an Israeli citizen named Shalom Avitan. In February this year, a Malaysian court sentenced Avitan to seven years in prison for illegally possessing six unlicensed firearms and a large number of bullets, making him the first Israeli to face charges and imprisonment in Malaysia.

Israeli media described Avitan as a member of an Israeli underworld gang, who went to Malaysia to assassinate a rival gang leader. However, the Malaysian government identified Avitan as a Mossad agent, and Anwar stated that there is clear evidence indicating that Mossad is operating within the country, and they intend to use local residents in their operations.

He said that Mossad agents are very experienced and act quickly, with many people leaving Malaysia before their identities are exposed. He pledged to take more measures to enhance Malaysia's security.

"This case involves a couple from Selangor who were found to have collaborated with individuals believed to be Mossad agents to smuggle weapons from Thailand. They were later arrested and are currently serving sentences in prison," Anwar said, "I agree to take additional measures, and the Ministry of Home Affairs is enhancing our ability to monitor the situation."

The South China Morning Post pointed out that Mossad is known for its assassination, kidnapping, and other actions targeting "enemies of Israel," but the agency rarely acknowledges its operations. Over the past decade, Mossad has been accused of involvement in at least two incidents targeting Palestinians in Malaysia.

In 2018, two individuals reportedly Mossad agents shot and killed an engineer named Fadi al-Batsh, alleged to be a member of Hamas in Kuala Lumpur. Israel denied any connection to the incident, and the attackers are suspected to have left Malaysia shortly after the attack.

In 2022, a Malaysian court charged 13 suspects in Kuala Lumpur with abducting a Palestinian man in an attempt to obtain software used to invade mobile phones. Malaysian authorities did not rule out the possibility of Mossad's involvement in this case.

Malaysia is a Muslim-majority country and has consistently refused to recognize Israel diplomatically. Since the outbreak of the new round of the Israel-Palestine conflict in 2023, Malaysia has always supported Palestine, condemning Israel's war crimes and acts of genocide on multiple occasions, and calling for Israel's expulsion from the United Nations.

The Malay Mail reported that Anwar emphasized in parliament on the 22nd that Malaysia will not change its stance on issues such as Palestine, "No matter what impact, threats or opposition our position on Palestine or our good relations with Iran may face, it will not change our firm stance as an independent and sovereign nation to express our own views."
