Russia High-Speed Rail: High-speed railway will be opened between Moscow and Yekaterinburg

Russian State News Agency, Moscow - According to a presentation displayed by Russian Railways at the "Russia Transport" forum, Russia plans to build a high-speed railway between Yekaterinburg and Moscow.

The presentation states: "Second high-speed railway 'East': Moscow-Kazan-Yekaterinburg ... This high-speed railway from Moscow to Yekaterinburg will be the next link in Russia's new transportation system."

The presentation says: "The second high-speed railway is about 1,532 kilometers long, connecting the capital with the central cities of the Volga River Federal District and the Ural Federal District. The journey from Moscow to Yekaterinburg will be shortened from the current 25-28 hours to 6.5-8 hours."

Another slide further points out that the journey between Moscow and Yekaterinburg will be 6 hours and 36 minutes.

Prime Minister Mishustin said this autumn that the total length of Russia's future high-speed railway network will exceed 4,500 kilometers. In addition to the route between Moscow and St. Petersburg, high-speed railways will also extend from the capital to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, Yekaterinburg, Adler, and Ryazan.

High-speed rail refers to specially designed electrified double-track railways for trains running at speeds of 200 to 400 kilometers per hour. Russia currently has no such railways. The first pilot project will be the high-speed railway from Moscow to St. Petersburg, which is expected to be fully operational by 2028. At that time, the journey from Moscow to St. Petersburg will take 2 hours and 15 minutes.
