This event highlights the increasingly active presence of unmanned surface vessels, especially in one of the world’s most contested maritime zones. According to Seasats CEO Mike Flanagan, who spoke to TWZ, the encounter occurred approximately 73 miles northeast of Luzon Island in the Philippines. The Luzon Strait is one of the most strategically significant sea lanes globally—and also a potential flashpoint for conflict. It lies south of Taiwan and north of the Philippines, serving as the vital chokepoint connecting the Western Pacific Ocean with the South China Sea. Air, surface, and underwater traffic in this region is extremely dense; major military powers conduct frequent operations here, and it is also a crucial hub for international commercial shipping. In the event of a crisis across the Taiwan Strait, this area would instantly transform into a super-weapon battlefield. With its unique coastal geography and strategic importance, this region will likely become a primary hunting ground for various types of unmanned vessels in future conflicts.
The involved vessel was the "Lightfish" USV. According to the company, this 12-foot-long (approximately 3.6 meters), 305-pound (about 138 kilograms) unmanned craft operates using solar panels combined with a hybrid power system, enabling it to remain at sea for up to six months continuously, covering vast distances. The "Lightfish" is not designed as a high-speed craft; instead, it prioritizes endurance, making it unlikely to “chase” warships. However, many other USV models possess this capability.
In an email, Flanagan explained: “The 'Lightfish' locked onto the Chinese warship via radar at around 10 nautical miles and conducted observations at visual range—within just a few hundred meters. The incident occurred on the evening of June 15 Pacific Time. Our monitoring team immediately detected the situation and alerted us.”
The Chinese destroyer detected the "Lightfish" and took evasive action.
Flanagan noted: “We don’t know their intent, but we observed the vessel alter course, generally maintaining surveillance over our 'Lightfish' USV.”
Afterward, the company discussed the matter with U.S. military authorities, though Flanagan declined to disclose any details.
The company provided two videos showing the Chinese warship from the "Lightfish"’s perspective. In the footage, the destroyer appears to move slowly—or even remain stationary.

Flanagan stated: “The Ukrainians have conclusively proven that small unmanned vessels pose a serious threat to surface ships. With over 8,000 nautical miles of range, the 'Lightfish' demonstrates that the entire ocean now falls within the reach of small unmanned vessels—they are no longer limited to coastal or near-shore assets.”
The June 15 encounter was merely one instance among several encounters between Seasats’ USVs and Chinese warships. Flanagan said that in May of this year, earlier in the voyage, the "Lightfish" had encountered a Chinese Type 056 corvette while crossing the Taiwan Strait.
In a company press release at the time, he noted: “This isn’t the first time our USV has come face-to-face with a Chinese warship. But the location and timing of this encounter make it particularly noteworthy, and capturing and sharing geotagged photographic evidence is truly unique.”
To date, none of these incidents have led to Chinese forces firing upon the unmanned vessels.
This time, the slow-moving and small-sized "Lightfish" may have been recognized as posing little threat to the destroyer.
