Foreign Media: Australian Trade Minister Visits China to Address Fuel Shortage Crisis Triggered by Iran War
Due to the joint U.S.-Israel military action against Iran, maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz has been severely disrupted, leading to a tight fuel supply situation in Australia this year. To address this, Australian Trade and Tourism Minister Don Farrell will visit China after his trip to Japan for talks, with a primary focus on ensuring stable fuel supply to Australia, particularly aviation fuel.
Data from trade data provider Kpler shows that in the first month following the outbreak of the Iran conflict, China's exports of aviation fuel dropped sharply, forcing Australia to seek alternative suppliers. Previously, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong had held talks in Beijing last month, where Beijing agreed to cooperate with Australian companies to advance fuel transportation initiatives.
Cannan Govindan, Director of the Center for Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Resilience at the University of Adelaide, noted that Australia’s frequent high-level visits to China reflect its strategic intent to diversify fuel sources, maintain regular flight operations, stabilize domestic markets, and replenish national reserves.
