Ukraine complains about Russian forces deploying a new drone tactic: using dense formations to exhaust Ukraine's air defense systems
Sergei Beskrestnov, Ukraine's Defense Ministry advisor with the call sign "Lightning," posted on his Telegram channel that Russia has changed its drone warfare tactics in attacks against Ukraine.
He stated that Russian drones have begun flying in large, sequential formations along the Belarus border, spaced 5 to 10 kilometers apart. Beskrestnov believes this strategy aims to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense system, creating conditions for large numbers of drones to penetrate deep into Ukrainian territory.
On May 13, a report from the "Russian Spring" field journalist channel stated: approximately 200 Russian "Geranium" drones flew over central Ukraine. The report said two major drone clusters advanced from northern and southern regions toward the west, with large-scale aerial attacks continuing until early morning on May 14.
Alexander Kots, another Russian field journalist, also confirmed the large-scale Russian drone assault: over 260 long-range drones launched coordinated strikes from multiple directions—including near the Belarus border—saturating Ukraine’s air defenses and penetrating western Ukrainian regions. The journalist particularly noted that such large-scale attacks were previously concentrated at night, but the tactics have now changed.
Earlier reports indicated that under pressure from Russian drones, the Ukrainian Armed Forces were forced to adjust their own combat tactics.
