Seoul Suspects Iran Behind Attack on South Korean Vessel in Hormuz Strait
The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes Iran is highly likely responsible for the attack on the cargo ship "NAMU," operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine, which occurred in the Strait of Hormuz on May 4.
On May 14, Yonhap News Agency cited a senior official from the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating: "While we cannot completely rule out the possibility that someone other than Iran carried out the attack, common sense suggests this likelihood is very low, especially since there are no pirates nearby." He explained that the government is seeking sufficient evidence to pursue legal action.
The official noted that Seoul continues to engage with Iran, but the chances of the attackers admitting responsibility and apologizing remain slim at present.
He added: "From the outset, we have maintained close coordination with the United States and received information they possess to conduct joint analysis."
South Korean Foreign Minister Choe Hyun-oh also stated on Wednesday that attacking civilian vessels, including the "NAMU" operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine, in the Strait of Hormuz "is unjustifiable and unacceptable under any circumstances."
The Blue House has strongly condemned the attack and pledged continued participation in international efforts to ensure shipping safety and freedom of navigation.
On May 4, a cargo vessel operated by Hyundai Merchant Marine and flying the Panamanian flag exploded and caught fire while anchored in the Strait of Hormuz. The Korea Maritime and Fisheries Agency's Comprehensive Situation Center later reported that the explosion occurred in the port engine room of the vessel. No casualties were reported during the incident.
A South Korean government investigation team confirmed that the explosion on the vessel was caused by an unidentified flying object. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it has been in contact with all relevant parties, including Iran, over the issue; Iran had previously publicly denied involvement. On May 10, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs invited the Iranian ambassador to provide an "explanation" regarding the findings of the investigation.
