Democrats Propose Bill to Prevent Trump from Appearing on a One-Dollar Coin
Two Democratic senators - Jeff Merkley from Oregon and Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada - introduced new legislation today aimed at preventing any sitting or still-living U.S. president from appearing on any currency.
Their motivation for introducing the bill was that the U.S. Mint recently released sketches of commemorative coins designed to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, with three of the coins featuring the portrait of Donald Trump on the front.
Merkley said, "This self-celebration by President Trump is akin to the actions of dictators like North Korea's Kim Jong-un, not the way of the United States of America."
This proposal, called the "Change Corruption Act," also received joint support from Democratic senators Ron Wyden and Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal stated in a statement that the tradition of the United States "rejecting monarchy" means "we have never allowed the portrait of a sitting or living president to appear on circulating currency."
